Potatoes have been found, on numerous experiments, both in this coun- tr", in Ireland, and alſo on the Continent, to produce an exceilent and abun- dant ſpirit.-An acre of potatoes will yield nearly five tiines more ſpit than an acre of barley, or about one mcaſüre of ſpirit for fixteen f pota= toes. The potatoes are boiled and bruiſed and mixed with water to the conſiſtence of cream. The liquor is luffered to ferment for three days, and then diftilled.
A few wecks ſince, as 2 man was digging up the root of an old tree in a wood near Crewkerne, he diſcovered a(nake's nelt, tormid of feathers, 8&zC. and containing near leven!y nakes, ne of which meaſured ten jaches x und the middle, and nearly fix feet in le gth. The man has exhibited them ia the neighbourhood much to his advantage.
Lait week were taken up in 2 garden belonging to Mr. Richard Townfſ- hend, of the city of York, 450 Potatoes, and fixty of a ſmall fize, weighing ſeven ſtone two pounds(fourteen pounds to the fone) and meaſuring one buſhel and a half. and one quartern, being the produce ot a hngle potatve 5 and fiom eigkteen of the[ame ſort he nad eight buſhels.
Farmers may be ſupplied with foul ſalt(in any quantity) for brining wheat, by applying tv Meſſrs. Loames and Son, Chatham, or Mr. J. Grover, Graveſend.

Eight thouſand geeſe were ſold in London, op Saturday, Sept 29. One goole-feeder at Stratford, conſumes one hundred quarters of oats, and five quarters of pollard, per week--his general&ock at this ſaſon, is three thouſand geeſe, and ſix hundred dozen of ducks.

Anextraordinary egg was lately laid, by a hen belonging to W. Sanderſon, Zardener to the Rev. Dr. Davidſon, Muinhouſe, near Edinburgh, meaſuring in circumference, hix inches five eighths, weighing three ounces fourteen drams, Avoirdupoize.
O&. 8. The härveſt in Germany is very abundant, but unuſually backward. A week fince, the wheat, barley, and oats, were every where RKanding, the rye only had been got in.

Hereford Candlemas fair, on Monday, OS. 21, was unuſvally large, and the ſhew of cattle both for number, and the excellence of the beaſts, was by far the fineſt, within the memory of the oldest inhabitant of this City» eXhi- biting a gratifying ſpecimen of the opulence of our country, and the per fe&ion of our breed of cattle; in general the beasts ſold very OcwIy and at reduced prices; and from the immenſe quantity broi ght to market, of courſe numbers were driven away unſold.
