PREFACE.

Iv the midst of clamour, of contentzon, and the din of arms, we See with peculzar pleaSure that the peaceful pur- Suits vf Agriculture are not. neglected. UVur readers will acknowiecge, that when exterior commerce is obstructed 64 the con/us:on of generat hostility, every prudent State will attend especiatly to the means of internal improvement, that the Supplies of the Substantial articles of life may be abundantly provided, and that the country may be ren- dered independent of all foreign assistance for its Support.

Tt is not lung Since those Serious inconveniences were felt (whether from neglect or misfortune, we need not deter- mine,) w/ach awakened the fears, and ezxerted(he talents of every jriend to public Security and happiness. Since that period, it is with heightened Satisfaction, we have en- deavoured by the ciwculation of this work, to contribute our mite to enlarge the Sphere of agricultural knowledge, and to multiply the resources of human subsistence; and we hope it will have been found in our attempts to diffuse useful information, that we have Selected those topics which best deserve public attention. This Selection is all the merit to whick we aspire.
