¹) Die Titel zum Teil nach der Verlagsanzeige am Schlusse des ersten Bandes der Analecta. Trübners Guide ist auch hier nicht ganz verläßlich. Von der Berliner Auskunftsstelle konnten bis jetzt in Deutsch- land nur nachgewiesen werden Klipsteins Ags. Grammatik[vorhanden in Berlin, Preußische Staatsbibliothek] und die Analecta[Universitätsbiblio- theken Halle und Göttingen]. Die Gießener Universitätsbibliothek besitzt nichts von seinen Büchern.

2) Die Grammatik ist»Orville Horwitz, Esq.« aus Baltimore ge- widmet, einem mitstrebenden Philologen. Nach Henneman, a. a. O., S. XLVIII, ist Horwitz der Verfasser der dreißig Seiten langen Intro- duction on the Study of the Anglo-Saxon Language“, die das Buch ein- leitet. Sie ist datiert»Baltimore, Md., April 1848. Am Schlusse dieser Einleitung wird das Lob des Werkes in charakteristischer Weise ge- sprochen:„This is the only complete Grammar of the language with which we are acquainted, and certainly the only Anglo-Saxon Grammar published in this country. We hope, therefore, that it will not need to be stamped first with the seal of European approval, before it can be re- ceived into favour in our own country: but that it will at once, as it certainly deserves, meet with is proper reward, and be adopted as text- book in our Colleges and High Schools.“ Klipstein selbst gibt in seiner »June 1848 datierten Vorrede als hauptsächlich benützte Quellen an Rask's Angelsaksisk Sprogloere[sic!](1817), Grimms Deutsche Grammatik (1819 ff.) und Bosworth's Compendious Grammar(1826) und Dictionarny (1838). Thorpes englische UÜbersetzung der Grammatik von Rask(Copen- hagen 1830) erwähnt Klipstein nicht. Klipsteins Buch ist rein deskriptiv und beschränkt sich im wesentlichen auf die Paradigmen. Auf dialektische Unterschiede des Altenglischen geht er nicht ein, obwohl Bosworth bereits darauf hingewiesen hatte. Eine Kostprobe aus dem Kapitel der Prosodie (S. 184):„Alliteration, though sometimes used, was never a fundamental principle in Anglo-Saxon poetry...“

In der erwähnten Verlagsanzeige heißt es von dem Buche u. a.:„This work recommends itself particularly to the attention of every American student who'glories in his Anglo-Saxon descent' or Teutonic lineage, as well as of all who desire an acquaintance with a language which lies as the foundation of the English, and throws a light upon its elements and structure, derivable from no other source.... The time is coming when it will be considered eutterly disgraceful for any well bred Englishman or American’' to have neglected it...“
