Man gebraucht es:

Numerale twi ſind drei Präpoſitionen hergeleitet, nämlich: bé-twi-h; bé-twi-hs und bé-twam, zu denen noch als Nebenform böé-twéonum tritt. Die erſte Form bötwih erſtarb mit dem Agſ. Die zweite, welche aus der vorigen durch hinzugetretenes Genitiv— 8 entſtanden ſcheint, kam auf uns in der Form betwixt. Die dritte Form betwàm oder bitwàm, welche aus dem Dat, von twä und be gebildet wurde, ward bald durch die Nebenform bö-tweonum oder verderbt bö-tweénan vom Subſtantiv twedna verdrängt und gelangte als between ins Neueng. Die agſ. Formen ſind in gleicher Weiſe entſtanden wie die ahd. untar ziuskéèm, under ziuskén, inziusken, welche urſprünglich nur inter binos bedeuteten. Im Mhd. haben wir nach enzwischen. Nhd. iſt in⸗ zwiſchen nur Adverb und zwiſchen allein Präpoſ. cf. Grimm I. c. 268. Holl. tusschen für zwiſchen.

Alle vorkommenden Formen deuten durch ihren Urſprung auf einen Zwiſchenraum zwiſchen zwei Gegenſtänden oder Geſammtheitenhin. Man gebraucht die Präpoſitionen— cf. Mätz. l. c. 449. fl.—
