In der Bedeutung ſtimmen below und beneath faſt überein und ſtehen dem above gegenüber. Im Deutſchen geben wir es am beſten durch„unter“. Es ſteht 4

2. Imübertragenen Sinn. It elevates their spirit for a week, only to depress them, if possible, below their original level. Dick. Sk. Ch. 10, 260. The finest strokes in description are much below those in Acis and Galatea in Ovid. Vic. of W. 8, 27. Beneath mit den Nebenformen neath und underneath— im Norden als dialectiſche Form kömmt auch aneath vor— iſt aus den agſ. Formen beneodan, benidan und underneodtan, under- nidan entſtanden. Dieſe kommen wieder von den agſ. Adverbien und Präpoſitionen neodan, nidan (deorsum) her. Wie das alth. nickar; altn. nidr; ſchwed. und dän. ned auf eine verloren gegangene einfache Präpoſition nit oder nid(unten) hinweiſen, da im Skr. ni(de, deorsum) und Slv. nizu (deorsum) vorhanden ck. Grimm I. c. 258, ſo iſt wohl neodan deſſelben Urſprungs, denn wir finden auch im Alth. nidana, im Mhd. nidene, niden, im Altn. nidan und nedan, ebenſo die ſpäteren Ableitungen im Niederd. nedden und im Holl. beneden.
Die Bedeutung von beneath ſpielt vielfach in das Gebiet von under über und theilt mit below faſt alle Beziehungen. In den romaniſchen Sprachen hat man Ableitungen vom lat. subtus für dieſe Bedeutung, ſo ital. sotto, port. sotz, franz. sous, wal. subt. Im Spaniſchen wird bajo— wahrſcheinlich baskiſchen Urſprungs— für below und under gebraucht.
Der Gebrauch von below bezieht ſich
1. räumlich auf eine niederige Lage. Z. B.: No stores beneath its humble thatch required a master's care. Vic. of W. 8, 28. Which are only to be equalled in size by figures beneath them. Dick. Sk. Sc. 22, 179. My imagination would conjure up all that I had heard or read of the watery world beneath me. W. Irv. Skb. 5. As the crashing wreck was sinking beneath us. Ib. 7. Her yards would dip into the water: her bow was almost burried beneath the waves. Ib. 8. I must stand the winters shocks beneath the woods and rocks oftentimes for a home. Burns. P. W. 16.
