Behind kömmt von den agſ. Wörtern hinder(retro), hindan und behindan(pone, post), welche mit dem goth. hindana(xéαν) zuſammenhängen. Im Alth. finden wir hintana(a tergo) und hintar(retro), wovon im Nhd. hinter und hinten abgeleitet wird. Ueber den Stamm dieſer Wörter cf. Grimm l. c. 3, 178. Im Däniſchen hat man die Präpoſition bay, und im Schwediſchen back in dieſer Bedeutung, die mit dem Engliſchen back dieſelben Wurzeln haben, welches wie das deutſche zurück nur Adverbium iſt. In Dialecten kommen neben behind auch noch die Formen ahint, ahent vor. cf. Mätzner l. c. 2, 476.
Die Bedeutung von behind bildet den Gegenſatz zu before und entſpricht dem deutſchen „hinter“. Es ſteht—
