Der Unterſchied zwiſchen amid und among liegt darin, daß bei amid an den Mittelpunkt eines Kreiſes gedacht wird, was bei among nicht der Fall iſt. Auch wird among bei neueren Schriftſtellern häufiger für amid gebraucht.

Among auch amongst,'mong und'mongst geſchrieben ſind nach Koch*) von den agſ. Sub⸗ ſtantiven Mengn und gemang hergeleitet, nach Mätzner**) von dem agſ. Verbum menigan, mengan, mengen, wozu unſer mittelniederdeutſches mangh, mang und neuniederdeutſch mank, manke gehört. Schon mit den agſ. Subſtantiven kommen Verbindungen im präpoſitionalen Sinn vor, die im Agſ. den Gen. regieren. Z. B.: on mang, Aàmang, gemang, ongemang, ongemong und im Altſ. angimang. Im Alteng. finden ſich die Formen amang, among, amonges und amongest neben imang, imong, emang, emonges, emongs und emongst.

Seiner Bedeutung nach drückt among die Stellung und Bewegung unter einer Menge von Perſonen und Dingen aus und entſpricht unſerem deutſchen„unter“,„zwiſchen“; dem ital. tra und con, dem ſpan. entre und dem lettiſchen sta'rp***).
