Es finden ſich in den germaniſchen Dialecten viele ähnliche Wörter ſo altſ. aftar, eft; altfrieſ. efter und efta; mhd. aftar und after; altn. eftir und eptir; holl. und niederd. achter; däniſch und ſchwed. efter.
Im Lettiſchen leitet man von dem Subſtantiv pakala(das und der Hintere) die Präpo⸗ ſition pakal„hinten nach“ ab. In den romaniſchen Sprachen vertreten Ableitungen von post*) wie ital. dopo, ſpa. depues de und von de retro franz. derrière, ital. dietro oder drieto, portg. dereire oder derrier und von pressum wie franz. après die Bedeutung von after und behind.
Die Bedeutung drückt eine Folge in räumlicher und zeitlicher Beziehung aus und dem Be⸗ griff der Folge ſchließt ſich der an, welcher eine Gemäßheit, ein Zielen und Streben ausdrückt. Es entſpricht den griech. Präpoſitionen eri, zard und uerd c. Acc. und dem lat. post und auch secundum. Im Deutſchen wird es am meiſten durch„nach“,„zufolge“,„hinter“ und„gemäß“ über⸗ ſetzt. Wir wollen ihr Gebiet in vierfacher Weiſe betrachten: nämlich 1. räumlich; 2. zeitlich; 3. bei einer Gemäßheit und Uebereinſtimmung und 4. wenn es ein Ziel ausdrückt. cf. Mätzner II. 477.
