Der Bedeutung nach hat es zum Gegenſatz below. Es drückt das Befinden eines Gegen⸗ ſtandes über einen andern aus, ebenſo wie das Hinausgehen oder Ueberbieten und entſpricht am beſten unſerm„über“.

Above und over treten im räumlichen Gebrauche nahe aneinander, doch hat above nicht den ganzen Umfang der Bedeutung von over. Above drückt nur das aus, was oberhalb eines niedriger gelegenen Gegenſtandes iſt oder geſchieht, während over auch die Stellung eines Gegen⸗ ſtandes ſenkrecht oberhalb eines andern ausdrückt und dann auch die Thätigkeit eines Gegenſtandes oberhalb eines andern ſich hinziehenden ausdrückt, wobei die Thätigkeit an der einen Grenze deſſelben beginnt und an der andern endet.
