Bei mehreren Verben kommen neben about auch noch andere Präpoſitionen vor, beſonders of und on; wie im Engliſchen überhaupt die Gebiete der einzelnen Präpoſition nicht ſtreng ab⸗ gegrenzt find, ſondern das Gebiet der einen oft in das der anderen übertritt.
Above zuweilen auch wohl'bove geſchrieben iſt eine Präpoſition germaniſchen Urſprungs und zwar iſt ſie ein dreifaches Compoſitum aus A= on, he und ufan. Bei Ormulum kommt zuerſt abufenn vor, dem wahrſcheinlich ein agſ. on-b-üfan zu Grunde liegt. Dem ufan liegt das Sskr. u(Demonſtrativpronomen) und die Präpoſition pa alſo uüpa(anhin) zu Grunde. Das agſ. üfan kömmt nur als Adverbium vor. Erſt die Verbindung büfan und auch on üfan geben eine Präpoſition mit Dat. Im Alteng. finden ſich die Formen abufen, abuven, aboven, above, abuf und abof.
