On Saturday the zith infſt, Aa numerous and very reſpettable company of the gentlemen who had attended the ſpring courſe of Ie&ures of Mr. Bruokes (at his theatre in Blenheim-ſtreet great Marlborough-Itrcet) on Anatomy, Phyſiology and Surgery, dined together at the Crown and Anchor tavcrn in the Strand; Lieutenant General Watſon prefided, and exprefſed to Mr. Brookes in a very handſome manner, that the public were much indebted to him for the experiments he bad made, by which the inconveniences of anato- mical inveſtigation are counteratted by his antiſceptic procels, and which Mr. Brookes has ſo far improved that the forid colour ot the mulcles is preiervcd and even heightencd, and the inveſtigation of diſcaſe purlued without danger. Mr C. Taylor, rhe Secretary to the Society ot Arts, noticed that from the opportunities of Mr. Brookes's pupils making experiments in comparative anatomy, conſiderable improvements are likely to ariſe in tie veterinary art and that the groſs blunders arißng from the practice of many Farriers aud Cow dodors will probably be corretted, by the attention of men ot abijities being dire&ed to a ſubje& which has been too much negleded, but which is of eſſential conlequence to the patrons of agriculture, and to every perlon con» netted with agricultural buſineſs.
Hemp.--Mr. Brealle, ot Amiens, has diſcovered a new proceſs for ſeep- ing hemp, the utility of which has been confirmed by numerous experiments made by celebrated men. It conſiſts in heating water in a velkel:0r vat toe the temperature of from 72 to 75 degrees of Reaumur, diſſolve in it 2 quantity of green ſoap in the ſame proportion to the hemp, as 1.10.43. The water employed for this purpoſe tIhould be about 49 times the weight of abe hemp. Throw the latter into the water[o as to float on the[urtace, cover the veſſel and extinguiſh the fire. Let the hemp remain in this Gtuation 45v2 hours, when it will be found to be ſuffciently(teeped. The advantages derived from this method are various, independant of the laving of time and expence, the ſame quantity of hemp yields more tow. The new method Jikewife tends to encourage the culture ot hemp, by facilitating its prepa- tion even to thoſe who do not live in the neighbourhood ot a 1ver, ream, or pond; and it obviates the ill conſcquences that might rcfult either fiom the infection of the air, or the corruption of the waters, which ſometimes deſtroy all the filh they contain, and mult of courſe prove highly injurious to the eatttle that chance to drink of them.
