Acre, for an improvement in the conftruÑion of boats and ſmall veſſels, for either ſailing or rowing, which would neither overſet in violent gales or guſts óf wind, nor ſink if they ſhould by any accident be filled with water.

This, in all probability, was an original invention, and always appeared to me to deſerve ſome public reward, as by the uſe of it alone thouſands of our brave ſeamen might have been ſaved during the laſt ſixteen years; and as a deſcription of it would be, perhaps, entertaining to ſome of your readers, more eſpecially to ſuch as live on the ſea-coaft, and(what is of infinitely more conſeguence) may perhaps, through their exertions, be the means of faviúg the lives of many of our unfortunate fellow creatures from a watery grave, IT truft you will not think it unworthy a place in your Magazine, and therefore I ſend it encloſed to you, in Mr. Lukins own words,

I am, Sir, yours,

April 24, 1802 n af Deſcription of an Improvement,in the Conſtru&tion of Boats and ſmall Veſſels,

for either ſailing or rowing, which will neither overſet in violent gales or ſud4

den guſts of wind, nor fink if they ſhould by any accident be filled with water; for the invention of which a patent was granted to Mr. Lionel

Lukin, of Long-Acre, Nov. 1785,

+ To the outſides of boats and veſſels of the common, or any other form, are projeéting gunnels, ſloping from the top of the. common gunnel, in z faint curve towards the water, ſo as not to interrupt the oars in rowing, and from the extreme or proje&Æion(which may be greater or leſs According to the ſize and uſe the boat or veſſel is intended for) returning to the ſide in a faint curve at a proper diſtance above the water line. Theſe projecting gun- nels may be made ſolid, of any lighe maferials that will repel the water, or hollow and water tight, or of cork, and covered with thin wood, canvas, leather, tin, or any ather light metal, mixture, or compoſition; theſe pro- JeCtious are very ſmall at the ſtem and ſtern, and increaſe gradually to the dimenſions required; they will effe&ually prevent the boat or veſſel from be- ing overſet by fudden ſqualls or violent gales of wind, either in ſailing or rowing, or by imprudent or unſkilful management, In the infi e, and at the lides(where the projeÆing gunnels are not neceſlary) and under the ſeats and thwarts, are tincloſures and bulk-heads, made water tight, or filled witk cork, or other light materials that will repel the water. The ſpaces between the timbers may, in like manner, be filled up; by this means the boat or veſſel will be ſo much lighter- than the body of water it muſt diſplace in fink- ing, that it will with fafety carry more than its common burthen, thought the remaining ſpace ſhould by any accident be filled with water. Under the bottom, along the centre of the keel, is affixed a falſe one of caſt iron, or other metal, this will ſtrengthen and prote the bottom from ivjury in many caſes, and by being placed ſo much below the ſurface of the water, will a& as ballaſt with more power than a much greater weight in the common ſitua- tion, and is much more fafe by being fixed in the proper pláce, and not lia- ble to ſhift by any ſudden motion of the boat or veſſel.
