The thanks of the Society were this Seflion voted to his Grace the Duke of Bridgewater, for a model of a Drain Plough; pre- ſented by him to them, and ſent with the following communi cation from his Grace’s Agent, Mr. Thomas Bury, of Worſ- ley Mills, near Mancheſter.
The model, which is made upon a ſcale of one inch to a foot, is placed in the Society’s Repolitory for public inſpe&ion.
To Mr. CHARLES TAavLoR. SIR, AM favoured with yours of the 15th inſtant. The model of the Gutter-Plough ſent you, was a-preſent to the Society from his Grace the Duke of Bridgewater, made by Robert Tomlinſon, one of his Grace’s conſtant workmen.
T procured the following account this morning from the Duke's farmer:—Ïn ciay’or ſtiff land that lies flat; the plough cannot go too deep; but ifit lies on a declivity, about five inches deep is ſufficient. In ſoft light ſoil, the plough ſhould go as deep as it can in all ſituations; becauſe the ſides moulder into the gutters. The belt time of draining is about Michael- mas, or as ſoon as the grafs is eaten; and the whole ſhould be accampliſhed betwixt that time and Chriſtmas.
In clay ground that has never been drained, ſix good horſes will be requiſite to draw the plough. In every following year the plough ſhould be run through the ſame gutters, and four horſes will then be ſufficient.
I am, Sir, your moſt obedient ſervant, TEROMAS: BURY.
P. S. The ſhare of the plough muſt be well fteeled, and ſhould be ground ſharp.
Warfley, September 18, 1800.
At Broughton,} in the neighbourhood of Mancheſter, con- fiderable quantities of ſiff clay, paſture, and meadow-land have been much improved, under the inſpection of the Secretary of the Society, by the uſe of this plough..
After the cattle were houſed for the winter, three horſes were employed to form drains with the plough at proper intervals: the ſmall drains were made at the diſtance of about nine ÿards
