as produdtive as they ought to be, there would probably be no occaíion for the importation of grain from other countries; and thus the manufa@uring induſtry of Lancaſhire, inſtead of being a market to encourage the agricultural exertions of other countries, would be the means of promoting thoſe do- meſtic improvements, which, in every point of view, are ſo much entitled to be preferred.

DRAINING—In a wet climate this mut be the baſis of all improvement. Mauch in this reſpect has been already done in Lancaſhire, but much ſtill remains to be effeCted, par- ticularly where the ſoil is of a clayey nature. The perfed&ion however to which this art will probably e. brought, in con- ſequence of the attention which has been late] y paid to it, and the diſcoveries which have been made by Mr. Elkington, will ſoon enable the people of this county, to clear their lands of ſuperfluous water, whether it ariſes from what falls upon the ſurface, or is occalñoned by ſubterraneous ſources

3. GRAINS.—Oats ſeem to be the natural grain to be extenſwveiy cultivated in this part of the iſland: nd as 121 all countries an early ſpecies is deſirable, it may not be unworthy of the Lancaſhire farmer, to try a PS O oat that has lately been much œulüvated in the neighbourhood of Edinburgh, known under the name of the Red Oat. It is remarkably early, being ripe before almoſt any other ſort, and produces more ineal than any oat of the ſame ſize; its ſtraw alſo is good for

attle, and it 1s not liable to ſhake. It is probable, on the whole, that it is one cf the greateſt means of improvement that couid be introduced into Lancaſhire.

- TURNIPS.— An increaſed culture of this valuable root, E an objet well entitled to the particular attention of thoſe, who wiſh to promote the improvement of this county. A great part of the ſoil of Lancaſhire is ſuppoſed to be particu- E well calculated for the culture of turnips.
