deservedly popular, and many ministers and many congregations, I have reason to think, would be glad to introduce them into their " Service of song," if they knew how to do it. For their special benefit the" Additional Hymn- book" is now sent forth.

In preparing this hymn- book it has been my aim and desire never to use the hymns of any living writer without first endeavouring to obtain his permission. I must, however, con-' fess honestly that there are a few hymns inserted in the volume of which I have entirely failed to discover either the author, or publisher. I have nevertheless ventured to use them for the public good, in the hope that I shall not give offence by so doing. If therefore any living hymnwriter sees his own compositions inserted in this little book without his sanction or permission, I ask him to acquit me of any intentional discourtesy, and to forgive me in consideration of the circumstances under which 1 have acted. I assure him that I would gladly have applied to him, if I had known where to apply.i boar
