IT

THE little hymn- book now in the reader's hands requires a few words of explanation. It is not a new Hymnal, comprising all the best English hymns, both old and new. Watts, Wesley, Newton, Cowper, Toplady, etc., are, for the most part, excluded from its pages. In a word, it is not meant to take the place of any of the general Collections which already exist. It is simply, as its name indicates, an" Additional" or" Supplementary" hymn- book. en Inole

My chief object has been to collect those hymns( chiefly of modern date) which are not to be found in the Collections most commonly used in the Churches. I believe that out of the three hundred hymns in this volume at least two hundred and fifty will not be found either in Kemble's, Bickersteth's, Windle's, Mercer's, the Christian Knowledge Society's, or the Ancient and Modern" Collections.

Yet many of these hymns, I venture to say, are very beautiful, many of them are already
