90 Pastorius to Mr. Bartley on the Breed of Sheep.[Aug.

is vot the design of your correspoudent"(Pastorius): to misre« present any quotation of mine, but 1 certainly did not state, hat in case we had Merino Sheep in number suflicient to answer the demand of our fine manufacturers, we Should be under the necessity of Selling the wool at twelve pence or eighteen pence per pound."

[ certainly had no intention whatever of misrepresenting Mr. Bartley's letter, nor have I done 50 in estimating the fſinest wool at one Shilling to one and 51x pence per pound u7- der his own statement of expence in rang it. I admit that he did not tate, in words, that if we had Merino Sheep in number Sufficient to answer the demand of our fine cloth manufacturers, we Should be under the necessity of.Selling he wool at twelve pence,' or eighteen pencc per pound. But T maintain, in the most positive manner, that he has stated what is tantamount to it; andupon reconsidering the Subject, 1 ihink he is'too well informed not to-perceive that I am right. He has mentioned the zaotural price of fine wool, I was en- deavouring vo ascertain the market price under certain'cir- eumstances; that is, the price with a number of Anglo-Me- rinos equal to Supply our demand for Such wool; and If it can ve produced for one StHilling to eighteen pence per pound,'by rhe Boglieh farmer;(as Mr. B. bas Stated) there can be no doubt but this zatural, would Speedily become the market price. No principle-in commerce, ort political economy, 1s better understood. To prove it, Lshall quote'a writer whose unequalled merits raised him from the humble station of a Little 3zchoolmaster of a Scotch parisb, to that of once ofthe greatest philosophers of the age=a writer whose profound kuowledge is universally adwitted, and who is not only an bionour to Scotland, which gave bim birth, but to be whole Grilized world.--The immortal Dr. Adam Smith Says, When zhe quantity(of any commodity) is Just Sufficient to Supply the eifectual demand and no more, tbe market price naturally comes 10 be exactly, or as nearly as can be judged oi, the Same wich the natural price." 1

1 very well remember, Mr. Editor, when 1 fist introduced the discussion relative to the pricc of the finest wool under a full Suppiy from Anglo-Merino Sheep, that Mr. Bartley waved be subject by Stating that a common farmer(with whom it was bis utwost ambition to class) could not be SUPPpoSCd com= petent to adjust the political relations of trade and commerce. Bur, Sir, Ssophistay will not direct us to that establisShment ot facts, which is desirable termination ofour discussions. At is only by these relations tbat Some important parts of our con- woversy can be determined; and I cannot allow him to treat themsozuperficially, whenthey do not 5upport bis 0wu opinions,
