N. B. There muſt be iron fraps and bolts to reſiſt the force of the ſcrews, S.

W,, Pipe of entrance of the turbid water.

X, Air-pipe to turn up vertically, and extend to a trifle above,

the head of water to be filtered.

Y, Pipe from the cleanſing-pump.

Z, Pipe for the delivery of the filtered water.

t7, Cavity wherein to colle the air to be diſcharged by the

ipe N. p Z; us A ſloping cavity to receive the feculencies forced down by the pump to be diſcharged by the pipe W.

N. B. What I have called pavements or paving ſtones, may, perhaps, be better if ſlates; bur Whatever material they are of, they ſhould be accurately ſquared and made of equal ſubſtance in each bed, and be as perfe planes as poſkble:: perhaps the body of the veſſel mighi be made wholly of brickwork, wrought in and rendered equably and fair with tarras,&C::

The upper ſurfaces of the ſides, c muſt be as ſtrait as poſſi- ble and perfe&ly even, ſo as to be free from any protube- rance or check.

The joints of the courſe of ſtones L may be cloſe,or nearly ſo, on the lower ſurface, to prevent any guantity of mortar from getting into the chamber K. è

The joint of the. ſtone above&, is madein this form, and terminates outwards to prevent the pobility ofany foul water getting into the chamber G-thereby. i

By grooving the junéures of the ſtones of. the incloſure, and ramming the ſquare cavities full of Water-procf mortar 5 would it not ſecure from leakage? é

When the ſcrews S have done their office, thé may be ſawn of fluſh with the tops of the timbers R,or allthe timbers, except thoſe buried in the brickwork, may be removed, if the top courſes of ſtone ſhall be bound down with iron,&c. to reſiſt the farce of the cleanſing-pump,&c.:

N. B. I think(if deſirable) the chambers D and K might be made much ſhallower.

The cleanſing-pump muſt always be ſupplied with fair water and ſhould(I think) be worked once in 24 hours.'
