iv PREFACE

general Advancement of that Induſtry, the Diffuſion of that Knowledge, and the Excitement of that inventive Ingenuity, upon which human Society de- pends for its moſt valuable Accommodations.

The Publiſher was extremely reluäant to aſk a higher Price from his Readers, than that for which the Numbers of this Magazine Were, till the Commence- ment of this fourth Volume, ſold. But, the Public have liberally conſidered, that the new Duties upon Paper, the increaſing Dearnefſs and Scarcity of Rags, the Riſe in the Wages of Workmen, and the Decreaſe in the relative Value of Möney, ought not to interrupt ought rather to enliventhoſe Enquiries, and that Cir culation of Knowledge to which alone we are to truſt for the Reſtoration of Plenty and Cheapneſs. Hence, the riſe in the Price of the Commercial Magazine, has not hindered the Extenſion of its Sale. Grateful for ſuch Encouragement, the Publiſher wil] uſeevery Means to render each ſucceſſive Volume more valuable

than the laſt.
