402 On the Exhibition of Fat Catile.[Deée. on the chief of markets, on the ſcience of our breeders, and on the ſpirit of our graziers.

The ſhow commenced, accotding to articles agreed upon, and publiſhed by the Smithfield Society, on Friday the 12th of De- cember, and was continued on the Saturday, Monday, and Tueſ- day following, at one ſhilling admiſſion, as uſual, in Woottons yard in Smithfeld.|

The cattle and ſheep brought into the yard as competitors for the various prizes were as follows, ſeventeen oxen, four heifers, and nineteen ſheep.

Of the oxen, two, of the Herefordſhire breed, were brought from his Majeſtys farms at Windſor.

Mr. Weſtcar, of Buckinghamſhire, had four Herefordſhire oxen in the yard; Mr. Grace, of Buckinghamſhire, had three Herefordſhire oxen; Mr. Edmonds, of W elford, near Fairford, Glouceſterſhire, two Herefordſhire oxen; Mr. King, ſaleſman, two Suſſex oxen, the ſame that were exhibited lait year for the graſs prize; Mr. Watts, of St. Albans, two Lincolnſhire oxen, twins, immenſely large, purchaſed at Smithfeld in March laft; Mr. Watkinſon, of Woodhouſe, near Leiceſter, one Leiceſter ox; and Mr. Sturdy, of Thorngate, one Norfolk ox.

The heifers were two of the Kent breed, fed by Mr. Kingſ- north, of Kinardington; and two of the Leiceſterſhire breed, fed by Mr. Holland, of Mickleton, near Cambden, Glouceſter- ſhire.

The ſheep were two ewes of the new Leiceſterſhire breed, the property of his Grace the Duke of Bedford; two wethers, of the ſame breed, fed by Mr. Weſtcar; five ditto, by Mr. Holland; two ditto, by Mr. Stone of Knighton, near Leiceſter; two ditto, by Mr. King; two ditto, by Mr. Welſh, of War- wickſhire; one ewe ditto, by Mr. Clayton, of Dumbleton, near Cambden; one, the only South-Down wether, by Mr, Ellman, of Shoreham; and two large Wiltſhire wethers by Mr. Mun- den.

The premiums, or rewards of merit, none of which, I be- lieve, exceeded twelve pounds, were ten in number, fix for cattle; and four for ſheep. T'woe, which were offered for the two fatteſt, handſomeſt, and beft oxen, without reſtriction to any particular- kind of food, were N the firſt to Mr. Weſtcar, the ſecond to Mr. Grace. he two prizes for graſs fed oxen were given, the firſt to Mr. Edmonds, and the ſecond to Mr. Weſtcar; the latter of which was not to exceed one hundred and fifty ſtone in weight.;

The premiums for the heifers were allotted to Mr. Kingſ- north and to Mr. Holland./

The four prizes for ſheep were adjudged to Mr, Weſtcar, Mr. Stone, Mr. Ellman, and Mr, King.
