MEMOIR OF ALEXANDER BRODIE, Eso. Iron-Maſter at BRosELEY.

LEXANDER BRODIE, Eſq.. Tron-maſter at Broſteley,

* Shropfhire, was born the 27th'of February, 1793, Old Style,

at the Rigs of Traquaire Minſhmore, in thé parih ofTraquaire, Tweedale.

In 1751, at ¡the age of eightéen, he left Scotland for Eng- land, furniſhed with letters af recommendations by Lady Coniers, mother-in-law to Lord Traguaire.. Mr. BRoDIE viſited Hun- tingdouſhire, where, excepting a, few mornthsxvhich-he paſfed in London, he réèmained upwards of tlirée y ears.:.

In 1755, Mr. Alderman Alexander, ironmongerand white- ſmith, employed Mr. BRonIKk,.on his return from London to Huntingdonſhire. He remained in his employment tWoyears. From 1757 to 1758 Mr. BRoD1E was employed by Mr.-Brod- bent, in making engines to extinguiſh fire. In 1758, was employed in Huntingdonſhire, where he made ſeveral excellent engines.

In 1759, returned London, ând became a maſtér black- ſmith, in Bear-yard, Lincolns-inn-fields; whete he diftinguiſhed himſelf as a cramp-maker to chair and tabinét-makers. In 7 DA he removed into Old Boſwell-court, Cléments-inn.

In 1760, he married Miſs MaRv H@w ARD, daughter to Mr. Richard Howard, of Chiſwick, Middleſex, by whom he had two children; both died in infancy. Mrs. BRODIE died in ¿TTT A Mr. B. remains a widower.

In 176, he removed to Fore-ſtrect, Strand, Tawple-bar, where he made the REGISTER STOVE. Dr. Williams was the firſt perſon who uſed it. He, two years after, took out à pâtent for 1t. It has received no material improvement, although thirty-two years have paſſed ſince 1t was firſt made. It has a ſliding bottom, which opens a valve behind, by which means the duſt is carried off from the fire as it falls on the hearth; at the ſame time the heavy ſoot falls behind. A door-frame which is the regiſter, is fixed above the cheeks of the ſtove, which is carried up with brick-work. The regifler is fixed to fall to the back the chimney, to carry the ſoot, rain, or hail, which may fall down the chimney, to the back part óf thé fireplace. The
