Cologne(on the Rhine)—A free imperial city, ſeated on the lefc banks of the Rhine. its population conſiſts of about 59,000 ſouls, and the nuraber of houſes amounts to 7,400. It contains manufaories of ribbons, printed cottons, calicoes, iron, lea- ther, looking glaſſes, eau de Cologne,&c. Bat the trade of this city falls ort of the importance, which, from its favourable poſition, it migbt eafily obtain. Formerly it was a place of great moment. At preſent the exports chiefly conſift in wine, wool lens, ribbons, ſtockings, brandy,&c. and the expedition of tranſit goods forms a very conſiderable branch of trad-. The town has a good harbour, and if it ſhould re- main in poſeſion of France, will probably become the capital of the new formed Fronch department on the left bank of the Rhine.
