At Peſt, in Hangary, was publiſhed laſt year, a catalogue of the new books, expoſed to ſale in that city at St, Joſeph’s fair. The number of new books, was 45 in the German,---and eight in the Hungarian language.---Sinular cata- logues are to be, henceforth, periodically continued at Peſt.
Count Bechtold has lately pubiifued, at Vienna, in the German, Ttalian, and Turkiſh languages, an account of the zethod for curing the plague by friciions with warm: oil,;
A Batanical Garden which vill contain ſpecimens of all the indigenous plants in the Auſtrian dominions, has begun to be formed by the Emperor of Germany, under the direction of Mr. Hoft, át the palace of Belvedere, near Vienna.
The Swediſh Univerſity of LUNDEN, is now, riſing into great celebrity, Tt is.attended by about 300 ſtudents. Retzius profeſſor of natural hiſtory,— Norberg, profeſſor of oriental languages, Florman, profeſſor of veterinary medi- cine, and Tengwoall fir profeſſor of juriſprudence, in that ſeminary, are men of diſtinguiſhed eminence in ſcience and erudition. Their coadjutors are not unworthy of them. There are three printing-preſſes, belonging to the uni- verhlity, It may. ſoon, perhaps, more than rival that of Upfal,
‘There is now publiſhed at Hamburgh, a Monthly Mufical Fournal, which is

The moſt eminent ARTISTs, at preſent encouraged in St. Peterſburgh, are LAmyr the painter, a native‘of Tyrol, who was warmly patronized by Potem- kin, in the reign of the late empreſs,—DE YEN, a Frenchman, of ſuperior me- rit as a painter, but who has been leſs liberally rewarded,—Mr. LE BRUN 2 ſtatuary, who was inthe ſervice of the late king of Poland, but whoſe ge nius ſtruggles with many unpleaſant difficulties at the Ruflian Court,—Mrs. LE BRUN, not the wife of the former, a female artiſt of talents, which are envied and éncouraged; and- Mr. Profeſſor KLAUBER, an engraver, whoſe works are of admirable excellence.
Burger’s celebrated ballad of Leonora was believed to have been imitated from an Engliih ballad, having in. it theſe lines,

Is is now ſaid to have been derived, as to-the ſtory, rather from an old popular tale or ballad of Saxony. In truth,the ſtory. is, one of thoſe which appear to be have been common, are popular legends, in all Europe, during the dark ages.
Mr. Bottiger, of Weimar, has lately publiſhed a fatisfaÆory.refutation of ſome of the aſſertions of Robi ¿ſon and Barruel, concerning the German illumi- nat1, which“renders it extremely probable, that thoſe gentlemen will hereafter be leſs praiſed for integrity and diſcernment, than for ready alacrity and be- lief in cértain caſes, and for a convenient vivacity of imagination.
A Daniſh work on he Philoſophy of KANT, was latciy publiſhed at Copen- hagen by Dr. TREsCHAW, re&tor of the ſchool for the Latin language at Chriſtiania.
A firſt volume of the works of the famous muſician MozART, lately pub- liſhed at Leiphic, wasſo eagerly bought up by the public, that a ſecond edition of that volume has become neceſſary, before it could be followed by the pub- lication of thé other volumes of the’colleétion.
