In ſuch a family, the wife, beſides attending the family, 15 ſuppoſed to earn, by ſpinning, or other work, what is equal to her board. The man's wages, at 15. per day(dedudting 12 days for holidays, attending funerals, and inclement wea- ther), are 151. After paying the rent of his cottage, furniſh- ing ſoap, candles,&c-. his earnings and expenditure willbs. nearly balanced.(Stat. Hitt. of Portmoak.) j

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES.

Springs of Water.--Excellent ſprings abound almoſt every where in the county, eſpecially in the vicinity of the riſing grounds. They are the offspring of the bills, from the ver- dant declivities of which they trickle down and irrigate the inferior grounds. Their fertilizing effets, however, are not ſo conſpicuous or ſo, general as were their waters direted by art to the irrigation of land.' This praCtice, ſ» benefi= cial in ſome places, is not. ſo general as it ought to be, or probably as it will be, carried in the periods of more» advanced improvements. The good effets of this mode of watering, are diſcerned from the beautiful verdure it pro- duces; thie luxuxiancy and tenderneſs of the graſs which it rears 3; the total eradication of ruſhes, and other plants that
