able, and healthful exerciſe, by way of avocation from neceſ- ſary mechanical bußfineſs, and thereby prevent tradeſmen from ſpending their time in the barbarous amuſement of cock-fighting, gaming, 8&0c., or from idling away their leiſure hours in unprofitable ſauntering about, or from the ruinous practice of tippling and quarrelling in low public houſes.

Rent of. Land.--The price at which farms rent in this county vary according to the ſtate of the land, or to ſome pe- culiar circumſtances attached to it. This obſervation 1s in= deed univerſal all over the iſland. Arable land, not encloſed, rents from 655.40 1Gs- per'acre 3 /encoſed, from 158.+to I1., and, in ſome few inſtances, to 31. The value of ſheep farms may in general be eſtimated at about 1s. 6d. or 25. per acre*. The town acres of Kinroſs let at about 31. per acre., Each of theſe acres ſell at between 8ol. and 100l., though liable in payment of about 105. Sterling yearly, of feu duties and of public burdens."This is a proof of the advantages ariſing from[ſmall poſſeſlions, in the hands of an induſtrious commu- nity, eſpecially in the vicinity of towns, where manure, la- bour, and attention by the proprietors are beſtowed upon them. From theſe ſmall ſubdivifſons of land, more for the real bene- fit and comfort of the people, is produced, than from over- grown farms, that, according to the great majority of the Jatiſtical accounts of Scotland, invariably check population, encourage monopoly, and aggrandize a few opulent farmers, whilſt great numbers of active and ſober families, living in induſtry and economy, are thereby much depreſſed, or re- duced to abjed& ſervitude, without even the poſlibility of raiſ- ing their fortunes, or bettering their circumſtances, in their preſent line of life.
