tute work to the latter. The principal turnpikes in the county are the great roads leading from Perth to Queensferry, and from Stirling to Kinroſs. They are kept in the beſt repair. The roads in the county, both turnpike and parochial or pri- vate, meaſure about miles in length, which added to feet, the average breadth, makes acres of ground occu- pied by the roads 3 the making of which, at an ordinary eſti- mate, comes to L,. Sterling, the yearly repair making an additional ſum of LL.; ſo that the preſent public and parochial roads have coſt- the community of this diftri& the ſum of L.. This is exclufive of the bridges thrown over the rivulets.

This county affords but few examples of ſtripes of plant- ing and hedge-row trees on the ſides of the public ways. Theſe trees, eſpecially when in foliage, obſtrudt the rays of the ſun, and currents of air, from drying the roads, by which means they are perpetually, during wet weather, almoſt impaſlable; and even, bad as they are, more money is expended on them, than on other parts of the road, of equal extent, to which the ſun's rays have free acceſs, and perhaps more than the whole value of the trees by which they are injured. The removal of this grievance is properly the concern of the truſtees on roads, or rather of the legiſlature, which has the power of prohibiting theſe obſtacles to the public utility. Were the plan generally adopted, of planting the corners or angles of fields, it would anſwer the purpoſes both of ſhelter and orna- ment, without injury to the roads.
