Attached to this latter claſs of agricultural ſervants, are many indeſcribable lofles, to which a farmer, placed in circumſtances where oc- caſional ſervice cannot be had, muſt ſubmit. Great care, however, ſhould be taken by farmers, as well as the landed Proprietors of a diſtrict, that the villagers within their bounds be furniſhed with the means of employing themſelves in ho- neſt and profitable occupations at home, or when not ENga- ged in the field otherwiſe they will become extremely bur- denſome and hurtful to ſociety.

The attention and induſtry of the inhabitants of the vil- lages in this county, are properly ſupported by encourage- ments afforded to be active and diligent at day labouring work, or in ſome mechanical operation at home; and the women are chiefly engaged in ſpinning linen yarn, making cloth, and in other houſehold occupations, attended with pro- ht, Little of their time is ſpent idly ſauntering about; and very few of them experience that poverty, meanneſs, and wretchedneſs, which are the concomitants of idleneſs or diſ- ſipation.

Roads.--This county is well interſeted with roads, which are in general very good. The parochial, in many places, are kept in excellent repair by the ſtatute work. The car- rlages, and the perſonal labour, may be either furniſhed in kind, or commuted, at the option of the individuals from whom they are exated. The ſcheme of making and re- Pairing public roads by ftatute work, or the joint aſſiſtance of the people chiefly concerned in theſe roads, was certainly very commendable, and probably the beſt that could have been deviſed at that period, when roads, able to admit heavy carriages, were opened for the ſervice of the public. At that time, the labour of the farmer, and of his horſes and ſervants, was not nearly ſo neceſlary in the field as afterwards, when
