There is a greater variety of carts in this county than in the
ſame given ſpace in any other part of the kingdom. In the
neighbourhood of Liverpool they are of very large ſize; thoſe Ce in the coal-trade within the towú are gauged to 36 buſhels Wincheſter.
The country dung carts, in the ſame neighbourhood, are alſo of 2 very large ſize, and generally will hold thirty-ſix Win- cheſter buſhels,— carry two tons of dung; they have fſix- inch wheels, In the interior parts of the county, the carts greatly diminiſh in ſize, and have variety of forms; in the northern part the ſize is very ſmall; the clog wheel,‘as it is tèrmed(three planks of aſh), which was E much in uſe in the north, on account of cheapneſs, has yielded to the ſpoke wheel; the clog being more clumſy, and the cart more liable to overſet—in theſe carts the wheel did not move upon the axis, but both turned round together.
