The ſuif clay lies on the tops of the highel This ſoil is general Hy wet which ariſes only from the rains in winter; for the ſprings are above 300 feet deep on the Tock chalk, lt has at Tome places a layer of a yellow coloured clay between the ſurface mould and the rock,

Flints.This land, or rather ſurface of fones, occurs only in ſmall tras in the vallies about Dover and Stock-

bury, near Maidſtone. It conſiſts of beds of flints, with

hardly any mould to be ſeen. This 1s very expenſive to plough; but, under good management, with plenty of

manure, 1s very produdive in wheat, TE. and beans, There is very little gravelly ſo1l, and not much fand in this diftri&; a little of the latter, however, is ſeen in the vicinity of Hyith 1e and Folkftone. This is very light land to work, and excellent for turnips, barley, clover, wheat, peaſe, and potatoes.

The fat rich lands in the vicinity of Faverſham, Sand-

wich, and Deal. confiſt of two ſorts of- ſoil: namely, EA

SE:: i rich ſandy loam, with a greater or leſs mixture of ſands and fuff clay, ſome of which, in the lower Parts, 18ra=

ther wet. The ſurface of the firſt is ſeven or elghtinches

deep, with a ſubſoil, varying in depth, of Rrong loam,

clay, or chalk, This ſoil is always plouched with four

horſes; is very dry and kindly to work at all ſeaſons, and no E or water-furrows are required Tt produces great crops of wheat, beans, barley, oats, and peaſe,

and ſoinetimes canary and radiſh.

The fif wet clay is that which has a frong clay bot- tom, or any E that ho ps Wäter, It lies low, is ſubjed to land-ſprings, and of cloſe texture
