rainy seasons, by leading the surface water into such re- ceptacles, without incurring the expence of sheds or hovels; but in fens, morasses, peat mosses, and marshes or fiat grounds, near the sea shore, where the soi! is full of vegetable and animal matter, or where the water 1S brackish, a supply of water can only be obtained by the
