Live Stock.—Fifh-ponds.—Profits of.

And the fame pond ftocked with tench only, drawn three years afterwards, afforded about 261.*

On the fuppofition that ina pond which fupports 2400 fifh, halfa pound each be added annually, it will be a r200lb. weight, which at 6d. per pound is gol. and for fifteen acres 40s. per acre, and at od. per Ib. 3]. per acref.

Thefe are profits, though by no means great, that fhould draw the attention of farmers to the cultivation of this fort of ftock wherever they have opportunities of— making ponds with facility for the purpofe, as the trouble of them is almoft nothing.

And, befides, it is probable that, by more care in the ftocking and other parts of their management, fuch ponds might be rendered much more productive. Where the ponds are fupplied by ftreams, feeding will feldom be neceflary, but in other cafes it may fometimes be ufeful. In thefe inftances bread compofed of coarfe flour and potatoes funk in cabbage nets may be made ufe of. Many other fubftances have likewife been recommended. In fevere frofts the ice fhould be daily broken to afford air, as without this precaution a great number of fith will frequently be deftroyed in fuch feafons.

* It is remarked that in this diftrict, the price is, when fold by the pound, one billing for tench and tenpence for the carp; which is the beft mode of felling them. But when by number, they are meafured from eye to tail, and fold. as under:
