602 Cultivation of Arable Land.Potatoes.

As cattle potatoes, the or noble and the clu/ter are the varieties principally cultivated, as they are both large in fize and very produétive.

The white and apple forts are however moft proper for being made ufe of in the early part of the feafon. And the pink-eyes and copper-plates are of a hardy nature, and probably capable of being grown with lefs perfect culture than moft of the other varieties. But though a number of trials have been made in order to determine the differences in the produdtivenefs of the different varieties, yet from the effets which the differences of foil, climate, culture, and other caufes produce, the matter has not been decided with much corretnefs*. The royal or Cumberland early is very productive and of a large fize, with a good flavour, and befides, it ripens early.

The foil in which this root is capable of being produced to the greateft ad- vantage isa rich loam of the light fandy kind, that poffeffes a medium degree of moifture. They may, howeyer, be grown with fuccefs on lands that are
