X. Of the gathering of the Wheels forward.

It is found; by experience, that wheels run better when they are ga- thered a little forward, or incline a little inward towards the foreſide of the axle.

The taper of the axle arm is the cauſe of this. The wheel being preſſed forward by the arm, it muſt be forced outward by the taper, unleſs it be ba- lanced by an inclination inward. The more, therefore, that the arm is taper- ed, and the leſs that the wheels are ga- thered below, the more gather forward
