Ofthe firſt he mentions arſenical, mercurial, and antimonial preparations; amongſt the ſecond he mentions the poiſons of ſeveral ſerpents, fiſhes, and inſe&ts; and amongſt the lait che Curara on the bank of the Oronoko, and the Woorara on the banks of the Amazones, and many others. But he thinks the ſtrongeſt is that of a tree hitherto undeſcribed, known by the name of Boa Upas, which grows in many of the warmer parts of India, Pprincipally in the iſlands of Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Bali, Macaßſler, and Celebes.

Rumphius teſtifies concerning this Indian poiſon, that it was more terrible to the Dutch than any warlike inſtru- ment; it 1s by him ſtyled Arbor toxicaria, and mentions two ſpecies of it, which he terms male and female; and deſcribes the tree as having a thick trunk, with ſpreading
