5. The four obstacles the bearers of the"fiery cross“ meet with in their race remind us very lively of the obstacles in Schiller's Bürgschaft; particulary the following passage:

Swollen was the stream, remote the bridge He dash'd amid the torrent's roar(III. 19.)
