descriptions of Mr. Raydt, at Public Schools; at the former the bad sides of the English system are much more prominent.

I daresay, there are a great number of Private Schools where such a shocking state of things does not exist, but to judge from what we hear and read, nearly all Private Schools are arranged on the same system. Even in Public Schools— to judge from Mr. Baumann— we find plenty of faults and abuses,„und der eine grosse Hauptunterschied besteht eigentlich nur darin, dass in den Public Schools das Recht der Einsprache den Eltern verkürzt ist.“²

Owing to the want of every Organization in Secondary Teaching, it is clear and only in the nature of things that such abuses should continue to exist from year to year. The Englisn Government should, at last, know that it is high time to take care of her long neglected middle classes(the backbone of the country), and give their children cheap and good instruction. I conclude with the words of Dr. Korell:„Möge England bald in ein durchgreifend geregeltes und den Anforderungen der Gegenwart entsprechenderes Unter- richts- und Erziehungswesen eintreten und sich auch dadurch den ihm zustehenden Rang unter den grossen Culturträgern der Geschichte sichern und den von ihm ausgehenden heil- samen Einfluss auf die Weiterentwickelung der Menschheit nach Gebühr erhalten und mehren.“
