In Latin, passages for translation are also set from books not prescribed,„but“, as the Prospectus says,„candidates are not likely to be rejected merely for failure in this part of the Examination.“ Short English sentences must also be put into Latin.

To obtain tie Degree of B. A., it is necessary to pass the Matriculation Examination, the Intermediate Arts Examination, the B. A. Examination. A higher degree than B. A. is Master of Arts. London M. A. Examination is open to all who have at any time taken the Degree of B. A. London, provided that they are not less than 20 years of age. Any who have passed in M. A.(Branch I, and also in either Branch III, or Branch IV; see below) can obtain the Degree of Doctor of Literature by writing an essay and passing an exami- nation on it.

The subjects of the London Intermediate Arts Eæamination are:

4. Englisn Language, Literature, and History,

5. Mathematics(comprising Arithmetic, except Cube Root; Algebra up to, but not in- cluding, the Binomial Theorem, the subjects of Euclid, Books VI and XI, with the Men- suration of the Sphere and other simple figures; Trigonometry, as far as the Solution of Triangles; Coordinate Geometry, as far as the Straight Line and Circle).

In French and German, no special books are prescribed, but passages of prose and verse are set for translation into English, and grammatical questions are asked.
