HISTORICAL LIBRARY,-continued.

work of easy reference for dates and leading events. For clearness of expression, accuracy of details, and interest of narrative, these Volumes have received the unqualified praise of the first literary men in the kingdom. The work has been compiled with great care from authentic sources, and, by close comparison, many errors have been corrected; whilst, by rejecting all redundancy of language, every leading fact and incident in the history of Europe is brought into these volumes; and each is dealt with to an extent apportioned to its importance. To the student these volumes will form a solid base- work of European history to the accomplished scholar the several chapters will serve as texts for reviving subjects more diffusely dealt with in large and expensive publications. The work is beautifully printed, and is alike adapted to the drawingand 12 room and the library table.

TO TEACHERS AND PUPILS

From the admirable division of subject- the great events in the history of each country being brought out in a way calculated to impress upon the memory the particular period of time in which they occurred, and the relation they have to events that preceded them, and to consequences which followed:-by purity of language, relieving the youthful mind from any embarassment of meaning, and, at the same time, imperceptibly assisting young persons in the formation of a style of writing at once simple and elegant; and by disencumbering the relation from heavy political disquisition; so that the leading incidents strike the imagination with force and interest. The engravings by which these volumes are illustrated will serve to impress more strongly upon the young mind the important works to which they refer, whilst the maps of the several countries will afford a most pleasant means of acquiring geographical knowledge, in the pupil's being directed to recur, during the reading, to the position of every place which is named in the body of the work.

OPINIONS OF THE PRESS.

Written in a very easy and agreeable style, perfectly adapted to the capacities of the persons for whom it is intended, while, from the information it contains, it will serve, by a rapid glance, to bring historical events to the minds of mature age.- Times.

Better and more useful books for the purposes for which they are designed, we know not.- Edinboro' Intelligencer.

Miss Corner appears to have spared no pains in rendering it both amusing and instructive.- Farmer's Journal.

As far as we can judge from an attentive perusal of it, perfect reliance may be placed on the correctness of its statements. In this point of view, the publication has higher pretensions than those of a mere school book.Morning Post.
