NOTE
TO THE
ENLARGED EDITION, 1871.
THE Music in this Collection is designed to be sung by ALL THE PEOPLE. It therefore contains none of our noble Cathedral Anthems, for, having been written for trained choirs, they cannot be adapted to Congregational use without unwarrantable mutilation. One or two compositions have been admitted for which the support of an organ and choir seems likely to be needful; but very few of the Anthems will, it is hoped, be found difficult, even where the human voice is esteemed the best organ, and" the great Congregation" is the only choir.
The addition now made( Anthems 45-71) provides, not only for ordinary worship, but for special occasions and seasons; for which, where they could not find appropriate music, the Compilers sought the aid of Sir J. Goss, to whom they, as also they believe the Churches who use the book, owe very warm thanks for the skill with which he has met their wants in a form of music somewhat new and uncommon. Those who are constantly using such metrical Collects as" Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah," or" Lord, dismiss us with Thy blessing," will not, it is presumed, object to the prose Collects, set as they are to simple and devotional tones.
By substituting the" Compressed" for the old" Vocal" score edition, the compilers are enabled to make this addition of twenty- seven Anthems, without increase of price; and as the words are still published at a penny, our poorest Congregations and Schools will be enabled to unite in this form of Bible Psalmody.

N.B.- A large portion of the Anthems in this Work, and nearly all the arrangements have been composed or revised especially for it, and are Copyright.
