but of sentiment, feeling, and religion, between the people of England and the great continent of America." In this, for the Protestant interests of the world, will be found the true wisdom.

And why should we not do so? We had one origin; we speak the same language; we hold the same faith: we have common interests in the civil, the social, the commercial and moral life. The twonations almost blend in one. Essentially, they are one for the defence of true liberty and just law. In this fact are enfolded the best interests of the race. And now, if we but improve our day, if we dare to set our faces the way time and destiny are going, we shall yet do a work of vast value to the world. But if we now fail to make a right, bold stand, as the two great Protestant powers of this century, we shall justly deserve the deepest censure of the nations struggling up towards a better life, and the very curse of all Omnipotence may be upon us. We must not fail! Voices are out on the morning and the midnight air, saying we must not fail now. By the rights and hopes of those who are yet stretching out their manacled hands to God and His people, we must not do it! By the thousands of the nameless dead on the many battle- fields of slavery we must not! By the need of the millions of suffering ones on the great continent of Africa, we must

not do it!
