PSALMS AND HINS OF PRAISE.
The Lord gives eyesight to the blind; The Lord supports the sinking mind; He sends the labouring conscience peace;
He helps the stranger in distress, The widow, and the fatherless,
And grants the prisoner sweet release. I'll praise him while he lends me breath, And, when my voice is lost in death,
Praise shall employ my nobler powers: My days of praise shall ne'er be past While life and thought and being last, Or immortality endures.( g)
496 THE spacious firmament on
With all the blue ethereal sky, And spangled heavens, a shining frame, Their Great Original proclaim. The unwearied sun, from day to day, Does his Creator's power display, And publishes to every land The work of an almighty Hand. Soon as the evening shades prevail, The moon takes up the wondrous tale, And nightly to the listening earth Repeats the story of her birth; While all the stars that round her burn,
And all the planets in their turn, Confirm the tidings, as they roll, And spread the truth from pole to pole. What though in solemn silence all Move round the dark terrestrial ball; What though no real voice or sound Amid their radiant orbs be found; In reason's ear they all rejoice, And utter forth a glorious voice; For ever singing as they shine, " The Hand that made us is divine."
498 COME, let us join our cheerful
songs
With angels round the throne;
Ten
thousand thousand are their tongues, But all their joys are one.
Worthy the Lamb that died," they cry, " To be exalted thus;" " Worthy the Lamb," our lips reply, " For he was slain for us."
Jesus
497 WHEN all thy mercies, O my
God,
My rising soul surveys, Transported with the view, I'm lost In wonder, love, and praise. Unnumber'd comforts to my soul Thy tender care bestow'd, Before my infant heart conceived From whom these comforts flow'd. When worn with sickness, oft hast thou With health renew'd my face; And, when in sins and sorrows sunk, Revived my soul with grace. Ten thousand thousand precious gifts My daily thanks employ; Nor is the least a cheerful heart, That tastes those gifts with joy. Through every period of my life
Thy goodness I'll pursue; And after death, in distant worlds, The glorious theme renew. Through all eternity to thee A joyful song I'll raise; For oh! eternity's too short To utter all thy praise.( c)
worthy to receive Honour and power divine: And blessings more than we can give Be, Lord, for ever thine. Let all that dwell above the sky,
And air, and earth, and seas, Conspire to lift thy glories high, And speak thine endless praise. The whole creation join in one, To bless the sacred name Of him that sits upon the throne, And to adore the Lamb.( c)
499 ALL hail the power of Jesus'
name!
Let angels prostrate fall; Bring forth the royal diadem,
And crown him, Lord of all. Crown him, ye martyrs of our God, Who from his altar call; Extol the stem of Jesse's rod, And crown him, Lord of all.
Ye seed of Israel's chosen race, Ye ransom'd of the fall, Hail him who saves you by his grace, And crown him, Lord of all.
Sinners, whose love can ne'er forget The wormwood and the gall; Go, spread your trophies at his feet, And crown him, Lord of all. Let every kindred, every tribe, On this terrestrial ball, To him all majesty ascribe,
And crown him, Lord of all.
O that with yonder sacred throng, We at his feet may fall, There join the everlasting song, And crown him, Lord of all.( c)
