ALL the Tunes marked thus* in the general Index,& c. are Originals, never before published. Those marked thus** are selected from a Publication by Mr. Moreton; the Copy- right having been purchased of the Widow, exclusively for this Work, by David Smith, Esq. of Staffordshire, and also the Copy- right of a set of originals, the Publication of which was prevented by the death of Mr. Moreton, from both these sets a Selection has been made of such Tunes as appeared best adapted for congregational use. The Tunes marked P* are private property, and inserted in this Collection, by leave of the proprietor: CRANBROOK, MARGATE, PARTING,& c. are Uput in this Volume with the consent of Mr. Peck. Most of the Tunes are figured for the Organ; and small notes occasionally added under the Air( which is next above the Bass) where the Verse parts move in thirds; but the reduced size of the Type rendered it necessary to omit the figures in places, and they are frequently omitted where the Chord of 6, 3,& c. are expressed, or implied in the Air. As a multiplicity of Indexes causes confusion, the Editor has endeavoured to compress the essential advantages of them all in one by inserting the number of Hymns suitable to each measure( immediately under the Names of the Tunes) which are in various Hymn Books to embrace all the different Collections would be impracticable, the Editor has therefore selected five of those he considered to be most generally used: In this Index the repeating Tunes are put in Italics, that when the leader of singing is suddenly called upon to set the Tune, he may avoid the mischievous effects of improper repetitions. Univ.- Bibl. Giessen PREFACE. THE universal acceptance which Dr. Rippon's Selection of Tunes has met with from the public, is fully evinced by the general circulation it has obtained; and by the many thousand copies which have been sold; this is highly grateful to the Editor, particularly as it was a juvenile performance, a first attempt, and, although years have rolled on, and experience has, in some degree, matured his judgment, yet he can say, that the same reasons which induced him to select the tunes, still remain in force for preserving the body of the work entire as it is. To meet the taste of the public, Supplement has been added to Supplement, until the book has grown almost too large for the pocket, yet the scattered fragments of art and natural genius, sufficient to fill another volume, appear to have been unnoticed; or, if gathered up, have been collected by different persons, and published in various forms, according to the fancy of the compiler; and always accompanied with a considerable number of the tunes which are in Dr. Rippon's selection; thus, the public, who are in possession of that book, have been compelled, for the sake of a few new tunes, to purchase the old ones over and over again. To obviate this inconvenience, was a principal reason for publishing the present volume,( which is not intended to oppose, but to accompany Dr. Rippon's Book,) and the flattering reception the first Edition of the Companion has met with from the public, is a gratifying proof of its utility. The Editor is indebted to David Smith, Esq. of Staffordshire, for collecting a number of standard and approved tunes, both old and new, and also for the copy- right of Mr. Moreton's Tunes; from the printed and manuscript copies, a selection has been made of such tunes, as appeared best adapted for congregational use; these, the Editor believes will be an acquisition to the work, and prove highly acceptable to the lovers of good and cheerful music; and, also, a few others, with which he has been favoured from particular friends, exclusively, for this volume. Among the collected Tunes, are some which travelled about in manuscript, until scarce a vestige of just composition remained about them, the melodies excepted; those have been harmonized afresh, but the Bass has been retained as much as possible, knowing how difficult it is for young singers to unlearn what they were first taught, however wrong it may be. A few of the melodies are evidently the production of persons whose knowledge of music was very superficial; however pleasant such airs may be in themselves, the dif ficulty, not to say the impracticability, of reducing their harmony to regular order, will appear to every judge of composition. These, and other trivial defects, will, perhaps, offend rigid critics; but the Editor has not so much consulted the discriminating judgment of the critic, as the taste of the Public, who( like Frederick the Great of Prussia) prefer the pleasantness of the music to the perfection of it; yet all may find satisfaction, for while the untutored Melodist enjoys 4 the artless strains of THIA1IKA, and the young Chorister is pleased with the simple chords of GABRIEL NEW, the scientific Harmonist will find in ABLOE one of the choicest pieces of composition that, perhaps, ever appeared in the compass of an Hymn Tune; there he may receive an agreeable repast, PREFACE. Where Modulation pure in Cadence neat, With well resolved Dischords yield a treat. Among the Tunes marked originals, there are four or five, the leading ideas of which( the author is free to confess) were borrowed from Mr. Purcell, Mr. Handel, Dr. Haydon, and, Dr. Callcott. All the original Tunes,& c. in this volume, are distinguished by an asterisk, and are private property. The Tunes are arranged according to their metres, and the peculiar measures are numbered, beginning with those which are most in use. To these are added, a Supplementary Number, chiefly consisting of such as are not found either in Watts, Rippon, or Lady Huntington's Hymn Book. Many of the Tunes to the peculiar Hymns, may be easily accommodated to the more usual measures, by uniting or dividing the notes under the dotted slurs. Thus, FORDINGBRIDGE may be sung to a long metre hymn, by uniting three notes to one syllable, as marked by the dotted slur in the first and third lines; on the contrary, NUNTON may be sung to the 148th measure, by singing three syllables to the notes marked with the dotted slur in the third strain. By these means, many Tunes may become useful, where peculiar measures are not sung. But here it may not be amiss to observe, that FAIRFAX NEw and VIENNA cannot be sung to the same hymn with any propriety, for although the number of lines and syllables agree, yet the difference in accent render it improper. Nor can CROYDON and GAY's be sung to the same Hymn, without destroying the sense of the words, and the style of the music, although they agree in accent as well as the number of lines and syllables; this is evident to every person who possesses the least real judgment in music and poetry, Some of the Tunes have a strain distinguished by the term Coda, by which is to be understood an additional strain, not absolutely necessary to the Piece or Tune, but which may be sung or omitted at pleasure. In the repeating Tunes, care has been taken to prevent( as much as possible) the breaking in upon, or weakening the force of expression in the words; the mischievous repeats which now abound, and are become so fashionable, render it almost impossible to find a whole Hymn, perfectly suitable to such repetitions. These absurdities, are, by some, considered as mere trifles; but the leader of public worship in singing, should recollect, that when words or sentences are improperly divided, the ideas must be either confused or totally destroyed; and true devotion must be interrupted also, unless the preposterous maxim of the Papists be right, that" ignorance is the mother of devotion." The Editor has, for several years, been endeavouring, as far as his narrow sphere and ability would enable him, to remove those abuses, and improve the manner of singing among the churches; how far his endeavours have been crowned with success, he must leave to the religious Public to determine; to them he devotes his services, and to their candour and encouragement this Volume is humbly submitted, by THE EDITOR. Tune 31.( 9th.) 5 0, my Lord, what shall I render, To thy name, Still the same, Gracious, good, and tender. Tune 99.( 44th.) 7 The sun he kindled; he sow'd The blue expansion with stars; The earth he founded; he made The sea, and prison'd with bars. 8 He form'd his image the last, Above all creatures beneath; Of clay the body he wrought The soul infus'd with his breath, 90 man! half angel in mind, O mortal! sprung from the dust; Thy Maker's glories adore, Thy Maker's clemency trust. Awake, my glory,& c. Tune 66.( 20th.) 10 With heart I do accord To praise and laud the Lord, In presence of the just, For great his works are found, To search them such are bound, As do him love and trust, His holy Name be fear'd. Tune 97.( 41st.) 12 Hail, Galilean King! Thy humble state I sing; Never shall my triumphs end; Hail, derided Majesty! Jesus, hail, the sinner's friend! Friend of publicans, and me. 13 He shines on earth ador'd, The presence of the Lord, God, the mighty God, and true, God, by highest heav'n confess'd, Stands display'd to mortal view, Liod supreme, for ever blest. Tune 59.( 23d.) 14 Come, and let us ascend, My companion and friend, To taste of the banquet above; If thy heart be as mine, If for Jesus it pine, Come up into the chariot of love. 15 Who in Jesus confide, They are bold to outride The storms of Affliction beneath: With the Prophet they soar To the heavenly shore, And outfly all the arrows of death. 16 Hallelujah they cry, To the King of the sky, To the great everlasting I AM! To the Lamb that was slain, And now liveth again, Hallelujah to God and the Lamb. Tune 18.( 4th.) IT Cast thy burdens on the Lord Leave them with thy Saviour; He( whose hands for thee were bor'd) Can and will deliver. 18 Leave thine earthly cares behind, Mind alone the Saviour; Count thou all beside but wind, Trample on it ever. Tune 28.( 12th.) 19 Lift up your heads with joyful hope, Salute the happy morn; Each heavenly power Proclaim the glad hour, Lo! Jesus the Saviour is born. 20 Then let us join the heavens above, Where hymning seraphs sing: Join all the glad powers, For their Lord is ours, Our Prophet, our Priest, and our King, Tune 106.( 45th.) 21 To Jehovah, thou, my soul, Give the tributary glory: Mem'ry all his love enroll Crowded is the boundless story. 22 With his love thy days are crown'd, Thy requests are always near him; High as heav'n above the ground, Is his love to those that fear him. Tune 103.( 49th.) 23 We see thy bounty in the light, We taste it in our food; We smell it in the flow'ry mead, We hear it in the wood. The mouths of children,& c. 24 To thee all angels cry alond, The heav'ns and pow'rs therein: Shall man alone then basely make Ingratitude his sin? The mouths of children,& c. 10 Tune 95.( 42nd.) 25 T'was thine to bring to view The well concerted plan, 26 Propitious to our wish, Thy wonted succour lend! 27 Of Sov'reign love, From heav'n above, And teach the good of sabbath- schools to man. 28 Be known to- day, In peerless sway, The Saviour's herald, and the children's friend. Tune 98.( 43rd.) On his bright throne above He hears the mourner's sigh; With soft paternal love, Oft wipes the streaming eye: And to relieve the sorrowing bosom's smart, Plants his own pity in the human heart. O let each generous friend, In blessing us be blest; May peace their steps attend, To yon bright world of rest, Where ev'ry brow with glory shall be crown'd, And hallelujahs fill the eternal round! Tune 94 and 92.( 38th.) 29 O Jesus my God, come make thine abode Within my poor heart; O Jesus come quickly, a Saviour thou art. 30 Salvation I need, I want to be freed From all my distress, And feel in my heart the rich blessings of peace. Tune 65.( 24th.) 31 O Jesus, our Lord, Thy name be ador'd For all the rich blessings convey'd through 32 In spirit we trace, [ thy word. Thy wonders of grace, And cheerfully join in a concert of praise. 33 Thrice happy are they Who hear and obey, And share in the blessings of this gospel day. Tune 100.- 101.( 47th.) 34 Holy Ghost, dispel our sadness, Pierce the clouds of sinful night; Come, thou source of sweetest gladness, Breathe thy life, and spread thy light, Loving Spirit, God of peace, Great distributor of grace, Rest upon this congregation, Hear, O hear our supplication. 35 From that height which knows no measure, As a gracious shower descend, Bringing down the richest treasure, Man can wish, or God can send. O thou glory, shining down From the Father and the Son, Grant us thy illumination, Rest upon this congregation. Tune 102.( 48th.) 36 When he came down from heav'n to earth, The stable was his place of birth, A chamber was denied him: And when, to do his father's will, With loving- kindness, pow'r, and skill, He went about, quite lowly still, The women's hands supplied him. 37 Why then should I, who taste his grace, And hope in heav'n to see his face, Be careful for the present? I soon shall have enough at home, From him who now affords me some: When death, to move my goods, shall come, My house will then be pleasant, Tune 51.( 14th.) 28 Tell me, O thou favour'd nation What is thy fond expectation? Some fair spreading lofty tree? Let not worldly pride confound thee, ' Mong the lowly plants around thee, Mark the lowest- that is He. 11 Tune 105.( 50th.) 39 The great Redeemer of mankind Commanded us to own thy sway; And yield to thee the willing mind; Let all the kind behest obey. Hail! Charity,& c. 40 Then shall the children's blessings rise, Aspiring to th' Almighty's throne; Angels shall waft them o'er the skies, And make the happy song their own. Hail! Charity,& c. Tune 110.( 52nd.) 41 Alas! too busy to be wise, Or else in sloth's amusements wand'ring, We scarce will ever turn our eyes Upon ourselves, with serious pond'ring. 42 On every toy abroad we gaze, Ourselves we shun, at home are strangers; And round and round, in error's maze, We trifle on, eternal rangers. Tune 107.( 53rd.) 43 Give me the peasants' clay- built cell, On a coarse pillow rest my weary head, If there with me my God will dwell, With cheerful heart I'll bless my homely bread. 44 The lofty majesty of God, Who in eternity of glory reigns; In visits to a mean abode, Descends to commune with adoring swains, 45 O happy souls! in humble seat, What transports from divine communion flow! Angels will you as brethren greet And hail the type of their own heaven below. Tune 199.( 56th.) 46 Behind me if I turn my eyes, Or forward, bend my wand'ring sight, Whatever objects round me rise Thro' the wide fields of air and light; With thee, impress'd, each various frame, The forming, moving, present God proclaim! Tune 108.( 54th.) 47 Terrestrial thrones, and emphyrean pow'rs, Obey thy all- commanding nod; Hell trembles, and with all her princes cow'rs, Beneath the terrors of thy rod. 49 48 A mortal once,' mong sinful mortáls born, A lowly virgin gave thee birth; No palace did thy natal hour adorn, No festal welcome thee on earth. Tune 109.( 55th.) " Ye all shall find favour, who trust in my merit, In me ye shall life everlasting inherit! For sorrow, and mourning, fear, anguish, and sadnes. I will give an abundance of joy, peace, and gladness."] Hallelujah,& c. 50 Let all the earth hear it, and join in the praises, Of Jesus the Saviour, whose goodness shall raise us From this world to glory; and while we adore him, We will sing of his wonders, and fall down before, him!] Hallelujah,& c. Tune 2.( 1st.) 51 Praise to God, immortal praise, For the love that crowns our days, Bounteous source of every joy! Let thy praise our tongues employ. 52 Flocks that whiten all the plain, Yellow sheaves of ripen'd grain; Clouds that drop their fat'ning dews, Suns that tem'rate warmth diffuse. 53 All that spring, with bounteous hand, Scatters o'er the smiling land; All that lib'ral autumn pours, From her rich o'erflowing stores. Tune 29.( 10, or 11.) 54 How cheerful the field and the mead, How gay does all nature appear! The flocks, as they carelessly feed, Rejoice in the spring of the year. 55 The foliage that shades the gay bow'rs, The herbage that springs from the clod, 56 12 Trees, plants, cooling springs, and fair flow'rs, All rise to the praise of our God. Shall man, the great master of all, The only insensible prove? Forbid it, fair gratitude's call! Forbid it, devotion and love! 57 The God who such wonders can raise, His name be for ever ador'd! Our lips shall incessantly praise, Our hearts shall rejoice in the Lord. Tune 56.( 21st.) 58 Jesus, our Lord and God, Bore sin's tremendous load; Praise ye his name: Tell what his arm hath done, What spoils from death he won; Sing his great name alone; Worthy the Lamb. 59 Let all the hosts above, In realms of endless love, Praise his dear name: To him ascribed be Honour and majesty, Thro' all eternity; Worthy the Lamb. Tune 69.( 29th.) 60 Thou Pow'r Supreme, by whose command I live! The grateful tribute of my praise receive: To thy indulgence I my being owe, And all the joys which from that being flow. 61 Thy skill my elemental clay refin'd, The vagrant particles in order join'd; With perfect symmetry compos'd the whole, And stamp'd thy sacred image on my soul: 62 A soul susceptible of endless joy, [ stroy; Whose frame, nor force, nor time, shall e'er deWhich shall survive, tho' nature claim my breath, And bid defiance to the darts of death: 63 To realms of bliss with active freedom soar, And live when earth and skies shall be no more: Author of life; in vain my tongue essays, For this immortal gift to speak thy praise. Tune 60.( 27th.) 64 The Lord is my shepherd, my guardian, and guide, Whatsoever I want, he will kindly provide: To the sheep of his pasture his mercies abound, His care and protection his flock will surround. 65 The Lord is my shepherd- what then shall I fear? What danger can frighten me, whilst he is near? Nor, when the time calls me, to walk thro' the vale Of the shadow of death, shall my heart ever fail. AARON Abbas Comb* Abloe 1st. 1 Bethel New.- C.
