CONGREGATIONAL PSALMIST CHURCH ANTHEMS Gb 3749 06/12500 Riv w. Lida matson. with the Editor's kind regards THE Congregational Psalmist: ( THIRD SECTION.) CHURCH ANTHEMS, ETC., BY THE BEST COMPOSERS, ANCIENT AND MODERN, The Music and Words arranged for Congregational Use. EDITED BY HENRY ALLON, D.D. LONDON: HODDER AND STOUGHTON, 27, PATERNOSTER ROW; NOVELLO, EWER,& CO., BERNERS STREET, OXFORD STREET,& 35, POULTRY. 1872. Gb 3 7 49 LONDON PARDON AND SON, TYPOGRAPHICAL MUSIC PRINTERS, PATERNOSTER ROW. Univ.- Bibl. Giessen T PREFACE. THIS HIS book of Church Anthems is intended for the use of the congregation. It is a collection of pieces which, as a rule, require in singing a degree of musical culture somewhat greater than that required by chorales or chants. Such a book appears to be demanded by the widely diffused and growing practice of anthem- singing in churches. So long as the song is that of the congregation there can be no objection to it; but nothing is more to be deprecated than the delegated worship of a choir, performing an anthem, with the congregation or an auditory. Whatever may be said in favour of this theoretically, above most things it has been found, practically, to destroy the worship- song of the people. The pieces in this book have been selected with a careful regard to their congregational fitness, and to the varied musical attainments of different congregations. The great bulk of them will be found practicable by congregations of ordinary musical culture, certainly by all who should aspire to sing anthems at all. A few are provided for congregations more advanced; and three or four have been admitted, which, from their antiphonal structure, are scarcely suited for ordinary congregational worship. These may serve for Festival or Home use. It has been found impossible, even in pieces generally suited for ordinary worship, altogether to exclude antiphonal movements; but these are so simple in structure and broad in effect, that, with ordinary preparation in the singing class, no difficulty in their congregational use will be found. There is no reason why those congregations who can go beyond the chorale and the chant should not fill their worship with the sustained and inspiring song of some of these pieces; only it is earnestly hoped that choirs will not introduce what iv congregations cannot sing, although even the ambition that essays too much is better than the culpable indifference that is contented with the rudest traditional drawl. While the aim of the Editor has been to compile a collection that in musical character shall be worthy of use in any congregation, and that is equal in merit to the noble chorales and chants contained in the first two sections of this work, it is obvious that other than musical considerations have necessarily influenced his selection. Many compositions not of the highest poetic and musical excellence are yet full of devout inspiration, in virtue of which they demand a place in a book of Church Song. A few of the pieces would have found a more appropriate place in the Chorale, or the Chant Book. Considerations of utility have led to their insertion here, simply because they were omitted there. The Editor trusts that the book will enrich the devotional feeling, and augment the worshipping joy of both the church and the home. The Editor gratefully acknowledges the kind permission which has been given to insert copyright pieces. No. I, from " Musical Times," by Messrs. THE CHOIR. " A valuable collection of nearly four hundred tunes, followed by a selection of chants and sanctuses which, for variety and musical excellence, could scarcely be surpassed." CHRISTIAN WORK. " A compilation of church music that well deserves its popularity." INTELLECTUAL OBSERVER. " It is just such a book as the superior musical knowledge of modern times ought to be able to make of the accumulated musical wealth of past ages. The whole of the arrangements are simple, grand, and effective." ATHENAEUM. " Some of the new tunes are very fine. All are well and gravely harmonized. The type is clear, and the volume is portable, without the page being illegibly small or inconveniently crowded." CHURCH OPINION. " It would be difficult to find a tune- book with more variety, and at the same time more satisfactory harmonies. There is a plentiful infusion of the fine German Chorales, while the old hymn tunes of the Latin Church, the psalmody of the times of the Reformation, and the compositions of modern days, including those of Dykes, Gauntlett, Turle, and Wesley, are fairly represented." CHURCH MAIL. " Without controversy this is the best and most complete Psalmist yet issued. Its every department witnesses to the care, conscientiousness, and catholicity of the editor, whose taste is as refined as his judgment is sound." FREEMAN. " It is admirably edited, exquisitely printed, and altogether the best book we know, both for congregational and family use. "" WEEKLY REVIEW. 66 ' We believe it to be the best adapted for general purposes which has ever come under our notice. The tunes are, for the most part, far from difficult, while in their selection from various sources, both ancient and modern, considerable care and exquisite taste have been exercised, at once commending the volume to the attention of all who adequately appreciate what is harmonious and devotional in sanctuary song. "" SCOTTISH CONGREGATIONAL MAGAZINE. " Candour compels us to say that we never met with a more perfect tunebook. The adaptation of music to words is carried out with rare taste and judgment." EVANGELICAL MAGAZINE. " On the first appearance of the work we expressed our admiration of the extensive research and discriminating judgment which the selection of music evinces, and, above all, for its admirable fitness for the purpose for which it is designed. A further acquaintance with the book has more than confirmed our first impressions, while its adoption by many congregations, and the gratifying results which appear in all cases to attend its use, afford continually multiplying sanctions for our own opinion."
