For He is our childhood's pattern, Day by day like us He grew, He was little, weak, and helpless, Fears and smiles like us He knew, And He feeleth for our sadness, And He shareth in our gladness. And our eyes at last shall see Him, Through His own redeeming love, For that CHILD, so dear and gentle, Is our LORD in Heaven above; And He leads His children on To the place where He is gone. O: Carol 59. Christmas Carols. Twas in the days when far and wide Men owned the Cæsar's sway, That his decree went forth, that all A certain tax should pay. Then from their home in Nazareth's vale. Obedient to the same, With Mary, his espoused wife, The saintly Joseph came. A stable and a manger, where The oxen lowed around, Was all the shelter Bethlehem gave, The welcome that they found! Yet blessed among women was That holy mother- maid, Who on that night her First- born SON There in the manger laid. The KING of kings, and LORD of lords, E'en from His very Birth, Had not a place to lay His Head, An outcast in the earth: And yet we know that little Babe Was tender to the touch, And weak as other infants are; He felt the cold as much! In swaddling bands she wrapped Him round, And smoothed His couch of straw, While unseen Angels watched beside, In mute, adoring awe. How softly did they fold their wings Beneath that star- lit shed, While eastern Sages from afar The new- born radiance led! And thus it is, from age to age, That as this night comes round, So sweetly, underneath the moon, The Christmas carols sound. Because to us a CHILD is born, Our BROTHER, and our KING, Angels in Heaven, and we on earth, Our joyful anthems sing. Carol 60. Christmas Carols. If we look at its outside, it is a most elegant book, bound in a handsome binding designed by Mr. Butterfield, and most suitable for a present at the great Christian Festival to which we are already beginning to look forward. And the printing, paper, and general get- up of the book agree with the chaste beauty of its exterior. But the chief reason why we wish to commend this volume to the notice of our readers is because of the immense good which may be done by the introducing of carol- singing into our churches and our homes. As Mr. Baring- Gould writes in his most valuable Introduction: Perhaps there is as great a need nowadays of impressing the great doctrine of the Incarnation on the popular mind as in the days of the great regenerator, St. Francis of Assissi, who was' the father of carols and carol- singing.' In his day, Manicheeism was making terrible ravages among Christian people; multitudes were losing their faith in, or denying altogether, the Incarnation of Our Lord, which is the keystone of Christianity; and it was a great inspiration which moved St. Francis to ask the Pope's permission to have in the churches representations of the Holy Nativity, and to sing hymns in the vernacular to the Divine Christ Child. And in our own day, just such a need as this still exists. We have to enforce this doctrine by every means in our power, and it is a grievous mistake to think that the only means available is to preach sermons on the subject. The country- people, at least, need something more, and, as Mr. Baring- Gould suggests, if we could not have the præsepio of St. Francis in our Churches, we could have it in our schools; and we could also sing his carols both there and in the Churches. Such a plan was carried out, we believe, by that noble Churchman, Charles Lowder, when he was Vicar of St. Peter's, London Docks. We think that Mr. Chope, the editor of this volume, makes a wise suggestion when he tells us the line which he has himself pursued in his well- known Church of St. Augustine, Queen's Gate. Since 1868, the book of Carols has been used instead of the hymn- book during the whole of the Christmas and Epiphany seasons; and he adds, it is always to us- congregation, choir, and clergy- the very beginning of Lent to lay aside our popular, much- loved carols." Psalms and Hymns" though appropriate at all other times of joy or sadness, are not the" spiritual songs" best suited to express our" great joy" for the" good tidings" of the Saviour's Birth and Manifestation to the Gentiles. The Carol belongs especially to this dispensation. It was introduced by the angel when he announced the first Christmas, and the Carol has continued the" Evangelical Song ever since. The variety in the editions of this book makes its popular use exceedingly easy. Besides the beautiful edition for presentation, published at 78. 6d., Mr. Chope has also published another musical edition, in cloth for 4s., and the treble part in paper covers for 1s. There are also several editions of the words only. One is a beautiful little volume, bound in cloth gilt with a special design, and illustrated with copious woodcuts "" EXTRACTS FROM REVIEWS. which costs only 1s. 6d.; another is prettily got up for 1s.; a third for 6d., and a fourth for 1d. No one, therefore, need be without a copy, even in the poorest parish, and we would suggest to clergy and Churchworkers the advisability of giving away these editions, either instead of Christmas cards, or as little reminders to the people of the services of Christmas Day. The editor, Mr. Chope, will also make grants of carols -music or words- to parishes where such joyful services are about to be introduced. Of the carols themselves, we need say but little. The names at the beginning of our notice are a sufficient guarantee that both words and music are of the highest order. The carols number 112, and are from both ancient and modern sources. The old traditional favourites, such as" The First Noel' and' The moon shone bright,' are, of course, inserted; and there is also a rich abundance from the pens of such writers as Dr. Irons, S. Baring- Gould, W. Chatterton Dix, G. P. Grantham, R. F. Smith, George Wither, Dr. Bright, E. Caswall, Bishops Coxe, Heber, and Wordsworth; and Mr. Chope, the editor. There are also several old Cornish carols, which will be especially welcome to the many Cornishmen who are scattered all over England. We are also glad that this volume contains carols for the Epiphany, the Conversion of St. Paul, and the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary; so that our carol books may be used in church instead of hymn books until Candlemas, when it is customary to remove the Christmas decorations. We trust that several churches in Hastings and St. Leonards will adopt Mr. Chope's admirable book, and so make Christmas more and more a feast of great joy, and a worthy commemoration of the Mystery of the Holy Incarnation."- Hastings and St. Leonards News, Nov. 10, 1882. DOLLAR: S. JAMES's.- The great feature, however, of the Christmas A few services this year has been the fuller introduction of carols. were sung last year, but the copies being comparatively few, were limited almost entirely to the choir. Notwithstanding this, they were so much appreciated that the Incumbent decided on introducing this year" CHOPE'S BOOK OF CAROLS FOR USE IN CHURCH." The effect of this has been to add an element of religious gladness to the services which has been welcomed by all. Before Christmas the incumbent addressed the congregation saying what he purposed doing, and expressing an earnest hope that it would not only add to the brightness of Christmas, but that through the use of these carols many truths would be brought home to their hearts, and the mystery of the Incarnation be more fully realised. The exceeding beauty of some of these carols, both as to words and music, can scarcely be overstated, and the way in which they rang through the church proved how welcome they were. Indeed all the copies which had been first got, and which it was thought would be sufficient, were exhausted at once, and a fresh supply had to be sent for. It is to be hoped that many other churches in Scotland will use this book next Christmas.- Scottish Guardian, diolo January 12, 1883. Now ready, 248 pages, cloth lettered, red edges, 4s.
